Alpacas of Springbrook Farm had a busy Spring 2009, attending the Gore Place Festival in Waltham, Massachusetts and the North American Alpaca Show in early April in Springfield, Massachusetts. We brought four of our top performers to the NAAS and were pleased to earn several ribbons, including two blue ribbons. We also attended a country fair at the local elementary school with our alpacas to educate the children on these very unique animals.
The highlight of our spring was hosting a seminar for new breeders at our farm on June 13th and 14th. Attendees came from as far away as Texas and North Carolina, as well as several local alpaca breeders. We were thrilled to have Dr. Stephen R. Purdy, Director of Camelid Studies at UMass Amherst as our featured speaker. Our very knowledgeable vet, Dr. Cindy Fuhs presented a hands on clinic on administering injections, body scoring and nail trimming, as well as other very useful topics in caring for your alpaca. Pam Smith, Manager of Marathon Mills explained the sequence of events that they perform in processing the alpaca fiber. She also shared with us some great ideas and strategies for expanding the uses of the fiber in a very useful manner.
We are looking forward to attending the Big E in early October, the Green Mountain Fall Spectacular in Burlington, Vermont over Halloween, and the New England Coastal Classic at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts in early November. We hope that you will stop by and visit us at these shows.
